How to protect and promote Serbia’s national interest? That was the topic when I was a guest at the talk show Revolucija on Happy TV hosted by film director Boris Malagurski.

To talk about this, Sergey Belous, my good friend, political analyst and historian from Kharkov, Ukraine was also a guest together with Stefan Karganović from the Srebrenica Historical Project and journalist Miodrag Zarković from the magazine Pečat.

We talked about Karl Haudbourg, a Frenchman with a tremendous love for Serbia. Unlike many young Serbs who wants to escape from Serbia, he wants to spend the rest of his life in Belgrade with his daughter. He made the website Serbia’s Ambassador to the World, but he has some challenges because the Serbian government don’t want to give him residency.

I was also able to speak about my interview with Christopher R. Hill  who was the US ambassador to Macedonia in 1998-99 and the leader of the failed Rambouillet talks. Hill was talking about the tremendous pressure from non-governmental organizations and media to wage war on Yugoslavia in 1999.

See below for the video.

Unfortunately, there are no English subtitles on the video above, but for those of you who do not speak Serbian, you can watch my speech at the Global Peace vs. Global Interventionism and Imperialism conference that I have been writing about previously, but then I did not have a video of my speech. You can say that I was not a very popular man when I suggested that we should confront all aggression, not only when NATO, US and the West are behind….

Distinction for army service in Kosovo

The Norwegian Armed Forces is very aware that I am an outspoken critic of NATO’s role in the Balkans and other places in the world. Despite this, they decided that I should receive a distinction for my job in KFOR.

This means that I have many friends in the army that appreciate what I do, and the recognition from my old colleagues is tremendously important for me.

Officially, I live in Norway, and how the army found my address in Belgrade is still a big mystery for me. But on May 16, I received a letter to my address in Belgrade, with a deadline to reply on May 15 with an invitation to receive a distinction.

English translation: The city of Trondheim would like to thank you, Kristian Kahrs, with recognition and deep respect the the service you have done for the Norwegian Armed Forces and Norway's participation in international operations in the service of peace. You are an excellent ambassador for our city. Trondheim, May 28, 2014, Rita Ottervik, Mayor.

You are an excellent ambassador for our city. Trondheim, May 28, 2014, Rita Ottervik, Mayor.

On May 28, I came from Belgrade to the Nidaros Cathedral in my home city of Trondheim to receive the official pin from Sør-Trøndelag County Municipality and a certificate of appreciation from Trondheim’s Mayor Rita Ottervik.

After the ceremony I had a chance to have a chat with Ottervik, and I told her that many veterans have contacted me and expressed their disgust that they have been abused for political purposes while being told that we were fighting for freedom and democracy.

A couple of days, one of my former officer colleagues wrote the following to me: “Many of us have discovered that we have become a small piece in a big political game. I cannot express how annoyed I am with this.”

As you see in from the certificate of appreciation on the left, it is a presumption that operations carried out by the Norwegian Armed Forces serve peace, but I would urge Norwegian and Western politicians to think through their rhetoric. In 2011, we went to war against Libya, not after a thorough parliamentary discussion but a couple of SMS messages. In December last year, Libya implemented Sharia law. NATO and the West do not have monopoly to define democracy and freedom.

OK, since I live in Serbia, and I love living there, but the Balkans is also the place for outrageous conspiracy theories. A very good friend of mine suggested that this was a trap made by former Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik to attack me later for receiving a distinction from the army I criticize.

But first of all, I do not criticize the Norwegian Armed Forces or my former colleagues but the politicians who gave us an impossible job. I am a Norwegian patriot, and if our freedom or sovereignty is threatened, I will defend my country.

Do not forget that there are many heroes in the Norwegian army, like my colleague who shot and killed two Albanians as they tried to attack the Serbian enclave of Čaglavica on March 17, 2004. Below, you can see a video of how Norwegian soldiers in Kosovo fought these days to protect Serbian lives on March 17, 2004. (The article continues under the video.)

I did a heck of a job in KFOR, leading their internet page, and when I finished my service in July 2000, kforonline.com (now nato.int/kfor) had 130,000 hits daily, which was a lot at this early time of the WWW.

Although I am not not at all comfortable the statements I made in KFOR, I am grateful that I have this experience because I have a better voice to warn politicians to make aggressive wars far away from home.

Arne Kristian Gansmo from the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, NRK, made a live interview with me outside the Nidaros Cathedral, but when I started to speak about my reaction to meeting the Maslovarić family from Istok, it was quite emotional for me. Even if tears come easier now than before, I hope I can make a difference with my stories. You can click here or on the picture to listen to the interview in Norwegian.

Catastrophic floods in Serbia

Serbia has not seen such a disaster since the war in 1999. Please help the Serbian people with donations. Photo by Dado Ruvic, Reuters.

The situation in Serbia is dramatic, and they have never experienced worse floods. People are losing their homes, and the damage to infrastructure is like a war. Many are sharing pictures and prayers, but in this situation, I believe the most efficient is to donate to the official accounts set up by the Serbian government.

The government has professionals that will know what are the greatest needs. Here you can give with an international Swift transfer, but unfortunately it is not possible to donate with a Visa or Mastercard. However, the victims deserve that you spend five minutes extra for an international transfer.

The assistance to those in need can be paid to the dinar account 840-3546721-89, purpose of payment: removal of consequences of the emergency situation – floods. For instructions how to transfer EUR and USD, look at the bottom.

If you have access to a Norwegian bank account, you can transfer Norwegian kroner to my account 9713.22.99483 in Skandiabanken, and I will make sure that the government received the equivalent amount in RSD without any delay. Please send me an email to kristian.kahrs@gmail.com if you choose this option.

However, if you would like to donate with a card, the Novak Đoković Foundation is a good opportunity. Novak has never forgotten where he came from, and he has showed that he has a great heart.

Of course, I see that the government calls for volunteers, and I might go, but at the moment I am more efficient in sharing information to the world and showing others how to get involved and to help.

Today, the Norwegian embassy in Belgrade and the Norwegian Association – Serbia had planned a big celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian constitution, but when the country we love is in the most desperate situation since the war in 1999, it would not be appropriate to celebrate with games for the children and a happy speeches. I am glad that the May 17 Committee made this decision.

Below you can see the speech made by Norwegian ambassador Nils Ragnar Kamsvåg, speaking a bit about the constitution and why it was appropriate to cancel the celebration.

Katastrofal flom i Serbia

No police provocation at Gazimestan

At Gazimestan with my friend Dr. Rada Trajković.

At Gazimestan with my friend Dr. Rada Trajković.

A story about police officers in Kosovo who actually did their job when Serbians celebrated Vidovdan and reading time of the Kosovo Constitution to EULEX police officers.

The Kosovo Police has not publicly admitted that that they provoked violence last year at Gazimestan, but someone must have told them that they failed miserably in 2012 because the police operation last Friday, June 28, went smoothly.

As I wrote in my story a year ago, Arrested charged and convicted, the Kosovo Police, especially their Regional Operational Support Unit (ROSU) acted brutally, beat up peaceful attendees to the Gazimestan ceremony and threw items in the ditch just because they had Cyrillic letters or Serbian national symbols.

They also opened my bag and threw my souvenirs, a t-shirt and a hat with a Serbian flag and saying Србија in Cyrillic letters. When I asked why, one ROSU police officer told me that this was not Serbia but Albania! ROSU was a big reason for the disaster last year, and they have also been heavily criticized.

It was obvious that these guys had a very poor understanding of Kosovo’s Constitution, and therefore I came to Gazimestan armed with one copy in English, Albanian and Serbian.

I was able to have a reading time with this Hungarian EULEX police officer to inform him how he and his colleagues failed to protect Kosovo's Constitution last year.

I was able to have a reading time with this Hungarian EULEX police officer to inform him how he and his colleagues failed to protect Kosovo’s Constitution last year.

As you can see in this video, my colleague John Bosnitch asked some very relevant questions why EULEX was not there protecting the law and the Serbian attendees against harassment from the Kosovo Police, and sure enough, the same Hungarian EULEX officer was present this year together with a larger group of EULEX officers.

Therefore I decided it was time for some reading of the Kosovo Constitution so they would know what laws they failed to protect last year. I started reading from Article 59 [Rights of Communities and their Members] :

Members of communities shall have the right, individually or in community, to:
(1) express, maintain and develop their culture and preserve the essential elements of their identity, namely their religion, language, traditions and culture;

One of the British police officers with three stars on his shoulders was clearly annoyed that I was trying to teach them a lesson, and he said, “We don’t have to listen to you. If you have a complaint, submit it to the Human Rights Review Panel (HRRP). We will not answer any questions.”

“I am not expecting you to answer any questions, but since you failed miserably last year, I must make sure that you know the constitution,” I replied and continued:

(5) use their language and alphabet freely in private and in public;

(7) use and display community symbols, in accordance with the law and international standards.

And to satisfy this British officer, I have complained to the HRRP and made my complaint public. Unfortunately my complaint was rejected, and it is a pity that the legality of confiscating items of national importance to the Serbs was not tested according to the Constitution of Kosovo.

I have wanted to confront the Priština authorities about this in a class action lawsuit, and I have had donors who would finance such a lawsuit. I have also been in contact with the Serbian government and talked to the Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić.

The problem is that it seems like getting into the EU is a bigger priority than to fight for Kosovo’s minorities for the Serbian government, and they are not willing to support my lawsuit. And without such governmental support, business in Serbia would be difficult for my donors. I understand them very well, and I have no intention of going against the Priština authorities alone.

However, fighting for the rights of Kosovo’s minorities is a long and tough battle, and we need to find the best way to support the Serbs and other minorities living in Kosovo. Although there was no police provocation at Gazimestan, Albanian extremists stoned a bus after the ceremony at Gazimestan had ended, and Serbs, including Serbian children, were injured.

Seeing the police operation this year, I am slightly more optimistic than last year. Many Serbian police officers working for the Kosovo Police were involved. These are police officers recruited mainly from the Serbian enclaves in the north of Kosovo. ROSU was not present at Gazimestan at all.

I was coming on the bus with Obraz, an organization with an undeserved reputation of being violent extremists. As he did last year, the leader of Obraz, Mladen Obradović, urged his people not to provoke any violence, and he emphasized the importance of going to a religious ceremony. Of course they shouted and sang a bit, but I didn’t see them provoke any violence. On the bus back from Kosovska Mitrovica, Obradović told his people that none of this matters if they do not have Jesus in their hearts.

We had Serbian police officers with us on the bus, and although the bus had Serbian Pristina plates, we had police escort in Albanian dominated areas on a bus with no plates!

But what was very interesting about this bus was that it had Serbian Priština license plates. Although Kosovo has its own plates, these are nowhere to be seen in the north of Kosovo, and Serbian plates from Albanian dominated areas like Priština, Peć and Prizren are banned, although the KM plates from Kosovska Mitrovica are very common in the north.

So, we had to take off the plates when we drove into the Albanian dominated areas south of Kosovska Mitrovica, and we actually had Kosovo Police escorting a bus, even if they officially do not support the Priština registration obtained in Niš. And we even had Serbian police officers with us on the bus to make sure of our safety!

However, I am not saying that I have full confidence that the Kosovo Police will be able to provide a safe and secure environment in Kosovo. Too many of the Kosovo Albanian officers want Kosovo to be a mono-ethnic state. I am disappointed, yet not surprised that neither the Kosovo Police nor Priština’s interior ministry have replied to any of my numerous phone calls or emails.

Of course, the majority of the Serbian police officers in Kosovo Police are not loyal to the new state either, but they do what they have to because the international community has given away a part of Serbia to the Priština authorities. Most of these police officers do their best to maintain law and order, even if they dislike those in charge in Kosovo. One of the Serbian police officers at Gazimestan said it like this:

“I am only loyal to the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia.”

(1) изражавају, одржавају и развијају своју културу и чувају суштинске елементе свог идентитета, односно вероисповест, језик, традицију и културу;

(7) користе и истичу симболе заједнице, у складу са законом и међународним стандардима;

Guest in the talk show Goli Život

English below.

On Oct. 27, 2012, I was the guest on the talk show Goli Život on TV Happy in Belgrade. The host, Milomir Marić, who is a well known TV personality in Serbia, asked me questions about my connection to mafia and organized crime in the Balkans. Marić also asked me about my experience in espionage, and I had a chance to joke a little bit about that; it was like a fencing game, but I enjoyed it. However, we also talked about serious matters, and I had the chance to explain to the Serbian people why it is important for me to give my apology as a former NATO officer for not protecting Serbs and non-Albanians in Kosovo. But one and a half hour on Serbian national TV on a Saturday night is not bad.

Court lies in Kosovo

The rule of law is non-existent in Kosovo, and when the judges do not have evidence against you, they make up what ever is suitable for them, and I have been sentenced for spreading “insecurity, fear and anxiety” against Kosovo Serb police woman Gordana Grujić.

I am no longer surprised or shocked that the courts in Kosovo make up lies. Of course, I have never threatened anyone.

I am no longer surprised or shocked that the courts in Kosovo make up lies. Of course, I have never threatened anyone, and the court has not presented any evidence for their claims.

The court lied when they claimed that I had said “It will soon be finished.” and published this on Facebook, and they did not present any documentation for this. I have never threatened anyone, and I have been very clear that threats have no place in a public discourse, but judges in Kosovo are

As I have written about before in my article Detention in Kosovo, the official complaint, I was arrested by the Kosovo Police for the second time on Aug 3, and they deprived me of my property, my computer, phones and camera because I had taken pictures in a public event.

When I received this sentence on Aug. 5, I was forced to sign a confession in Albanian. They said I would have to wait a couple of more days in detention if I should wait for a Serbian translation. But if I had waited for a Serbian translation, I would not have been able to protect my property that the Kosovo Police confiscated illegally.

Finallly, I received this Serbian translation on Aug. 16 when I picked up my equipment at the Norwegian embassy in Priština.   Although Serbian is an official language in Kosovo, the translation is very poor with numerous spelling mistakes.

I am no longer surprised by the lies and manipulation from those who are responsible for the rule of law in Kosovo.

Official complaint about the Kosovo Police and Priština Municipal Court

The Kosovo Police (KP) tries to threaten and intimidate me by throwing me in jail and giving me fines, confiscating my computer, phones and camera and threaten me with more jail and fines. However, it is obvious that they do not know me if they think I will give up my fight for freedom of speech and the basic human rights for Kosovo’s minorities.

I have been hesitant to tell the full story of the latest events as long as KP had custody of my property, but yesterday, I picked up my stuff at the Norwegian embassy in Priština. Even if I regret the fact that Norway recognized Kosovo and has an embassy in Priština, the Norwegian diplomats have been very professional and helpful in their contacts with the Priština Municipal Court.

Below you can see my video and message to Kosovo’s authorities, Detention in Kosovo, a message to the police shot outside Kosovo’s parliament and government building in Priština.
